The Altruistic Behavior Institute was founded at Cal Poly Humboldt in 1982. The Institute’s purpose is to seek out ways to enhance altruism and prosocial behavior in society. It does this through research, practice, education, publication, community participation, action-oriented projects, and workforce development
The BioARC is dedicated to providing quality training and research opportunities in biological anthropology for Humboldt students. At BioARC, student research assistants learn methods and engage in research in evolutionary and applied anthropology by working both independently (as project leads and in groups) and with faculty and other researchers. Research in the lab is constantly evolving depending on the interests of researchers and students.
The California Center for Rural Policy at Cal Poly Humboldt is a research center committed to informing policy, building community, and promoting the health and well-being of rural people and environments.
The Humboldt Center for Engaged Writing (CEW) is committed to contributing to meaningful educational experiences for all students by supporting the teaching and learning of writing at Humboldt and in the local community. The (CEW) aims to enhance the written and communication competencies of all Humboldt students in ways that support their contributions to civic and cultural life.
The Center for Equitable Higher Education (CEHE) North at Cal Poly Humboldt is to identify and reduce equity gaps and promote the vision that all students in higher education are able to meet their basic needs through multidisciplinary research designed to improve educational practices and policy.
The mission of this Institute is to develop and promote interdisciplinary marine and coastal research, education, and outreach at Humboldt. The institute will serve as a forum for coordinated development, funding, and execution of marine science research, education, and outreach efforts at Humboldt.
The mission of the Humboldt Science and Mathematics Center is to enhance science and mathematics education opportunities in California. Chartered in 2005, the Center offers programs and professional support for future teachers as well as practicing professionals. The Center is formally partnered with a number of University programs.
The mission of the Cal Poly Humboldt (Humboldt) Fire Resilience Institute is to serve as a center of expertise in wild land fire science and management that fosters interdisciplinary research, education, training, and outreach to promote effective solutions to wildfire challenges.
Improving access to a full life throughout an individual’s full life, using research and education on the physical, mental, and transpersonal dimensions of death and dying. Focused on serious chronic illness, terminal diagnoses, suicide, and healthy aging, with attention to rural context and vulnerable populations, our work advances tools for transformational helping that expand awareness, expertise, compassion, and impact among individuals, their families, healthcare providers, caregivers, policymakers, and the general public.
Institute for Entrepreneurship Education is designed to reach other academic departments on campus as well as the Redwood Coast business community. The institute is tailored for interdisciplinary study and also focuses on “social entrepreneurship,” instilling instruction with an ethic of social responsibility.
IHRRPP has the mission of advancing research, policy, and practices that reduce harm to people, communities, and the environment from problematic use of alcohol and other drugs, as well as problematic drug policy responses.
The Humboldt Earthquake Education Center offers workshops concerning earthquake education. It engages in other outreach activities, including publishing earthquake preparedness materials such as Living on Shaky Ground.
This institute seeks to improve the economic, social, physical, and environmental health of individuals and communities through the interdisciplinary scientific study of marijuana. HIIMR designs, conducts, analyzes, and disseminates research; provides applied expertise to policy makers, researchers, health professionals, businesses, and the media; and archives and provides access to source materials (raw data, media). The IHHP supports the local community in health promotion activities. The Institute’s facilities support research and training opportunities for Humboldt faculty and students in a broad range of topics related to health, human performance, disease prevention, physical activity and nutrition.
The Cal Poly Humboldt Institute for Spatial Analysis, Modeling, & Monitoring (ISAMM) is a focal point for the advancement of spatial research, innovation and application. The ISAMM is dedicated to the expansion of spatial analysis methodologies across disciplines and the full spectrum of real world issues. We work closely with the public and private sector entities to achieve this goal.
The mission of the River Institute is to conserve and restore river ecosystems locally, nationally, and internationally through multi-disciplinary research, education, policy reform, improved management practices, and creative restoration strategies. Students who contribute significantly on River Institute research projects will be encouraged to participate in co-authoring technical memoranda, research reports, and peer-reviewed journal articles. The River Institute will also encourage undergraduate and graduate participation in off-campus symposia, workshops, and conferences.
One of the foremost fuel cell development laboratories, SERC’s fuel cell systems have proven to be among the most reliable and efficient in the world. Schatz Energy Research Center (SERC) is working to establish clean energy technologies in our society. They specialize in renewable energy, energy efficiency, and hydrogen energy systems. Work involves research and development, technology demonstration, project development, energy systems analysis, and education and training.
The Cal Poly Humboldt Sea Level Rise Institute (SLRI) is an academic-tribal-community-government partnership that views sea-level rise planning as a transformative moment to reimagine the future of the California North Coast. The SLRI envisions a diverse network of collaborators working together across disciplines, sectors, and ways of knowing to develop sea-level rise research and planning that informs equitable, sustainable, and community-centered local climate action.
